Google Android

Android is an operating system developed for mobile devices such as cellular phones and tablet PCs etc. Actually it was developed by Android incorporation which was purchased by Google. Android is based on Linux kernel.

Android was a small company based in California was acquired by Google in 2005. At that time Android, Inc. made software for mobile phones. With the exception of brief update periods, Android has been available as open source since 21 October 2008. Google published most of  the source code (including network and telephony stacks) under an Apache License.

Since its original release Android has seen various updates. Generally,  the Android operating system is developed under a code name based on a dessert item. There are four main versions of Android is availabe:

1) 1.5 Cupcake

2)1.6 Donut

3)2.0/2.1 Eclair

4)2.2 Froyo

Now the new version Gingerbread which is scheduled to launch in fourth quarter of 2010

The Android operating system software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java based object oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a virtual machine featuring JIT compilation.Android has a large community of developers writing application programs that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 70,000 apps available for Android with some estimates saying 100,000 have been submitted, which makes it the second most popular mobile development environment.

But according to Google’s data more than 20% Android cellphones ran on version 1.6 (Donut), 15% on version 1.5(Cupcake) ,and nearly 60% ran on 2.1(Eclair). The latest version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) which was released in May ’10 is on just 4-5% cellphones.

So while buying an Android based cell phone just check the version of the Android in that phone because as we are paying so much money for that phone so we must get the latest version of Operating System installed on it.
